Rowing Shell & Oar Collection at
Mystic Seaport
 Ed Monahan, donor of Hoover's
Box-Boat, Sophie Macris, and Hart Perry view oar & scull display
Well over 20 shells and numerous vintage oars & sculls have been donated to the
NRF and Mystic Seaport to make one of the most complete collections of vintage rowing shells in the
world. There is a temporary display in the Rossi Mill Building at Mystic. To
visit please contact Hart Perry at (860) 535-0634 or
natrowing@comcast.net.

The NRF/Mystic Collection of Rowing & Racing Shells must be credited to the
fine work of Mystic Seaport Museum, National Rowing Foundation and The Friends
of Rowing History. Most importantly, it is through the great generosity of the
donors that this collection exists and will, forever, preserve the work of the
great boat-builders and the accomplishments of the outstanding scullers and
crews. From all in the rowing community – Thanks!

Joseph Garofalo Shell & Oar Building Equipment
The late Joseph Garofalo, boatbuilder & proprietor - Worcester
Oar & Paddle, prepared the partially built single on his production work
table. It is framed, and a small section of "skin" attached so Mystic
Seaport guests could see the shell building process. Also, he prepared a few
oars in various stages of completion. The benches and forms are from his
shop in Worcester, Mass.
